Jigme Dorji National Park – An Ultimate Tourist Site in Bhutan

The famous Jigme Dorji National Park in Bhutan, is named in honor of the late Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. This park is listed as the second biggest National Park of the country that encompasses the whole Gasa District and the northern side of Wangdue Phodrang District, Punakha, Thimpu District and Paro District. This National Park was opened to the public in the year 1974 and initially covered more than 4316 km² of areas. Also, the park has an impact of all three climate zones of Bhutan that ranges elevation from 1400 to more than 7000 meters.

The Jigme Dorji National Park also has a significant number of the population, dwelling within it. Approximately, 6500 people are residing here in 1000 houses that includes animal husbandry and subsistence agriculture. This park has been listed in the Bhutan’s Tentative List for its inclusion in UNESCO.

Features of Jigme Dorji National Park

This Jigme Dorji National Park is said to be the biologically rich areas, found across the Eastern Himalayan region. The lush green forests, permanent ice fields and glaciers on the North-Western border of Bhutan, significantly constitutes to its serene beauty and hence, attracts visitors to come here again and again. The lush greenery that fascinates your eyes and mind is due to the monsoon rains and the topographical gradient from 1000 meters to 7000+ meters above the level of the sea.

The most distinguished landmarks of the park are the sacred peaks like Jichu Drakey, Jomolhari and Tsherimgang, because they were once the home of the local deity. Some of the Bhutan’s main rivers i.e. Mo Chhu, Wangdi Chhu and Pa Chhu are headed by the streams coming from the glacial lakes and glaciers, which are spread across the mountains. The alpine region of this National Park has loads and loads of beautiful flowers, which include rhododendrons, national flower blue poppy, orchids, edelweiss and the list continues.

Furthermore, this park features various animal species that include Bharal also renowned as Himalayan Blue Sheep, Tiger, Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Takin, Black Bear, Clouded leopard, Black Musk Deer, Ussuri Dhole and spotted Linsang. This place is considered as one of the rare places, where Royal Bengal tiger and snow leopard habitats breed and overlap. Apart from all these, you shall also come across the Indian leopard, sambar, serow, goral, pika, marmot, barking deer and 300+ species of birds. This park is the only one in Bhutan, where so many animal and bird species stay together.
