Folk Heritage Museum Bhutan is located in its capital, i.e. Thimphu, which was established in the year 2001. The museum represents the great history of Bhutaneses material culture, visitors gain a marvelous insight of Bhutanese ancient time and their lifestyle. The entire museum has been set up inside a 19th century traditional house. A seasonal rhythm is organized, which shows the things being done in a proper rural household, means what they used to do. Every time the visitors come here, they see completely different activities. The team at the museum, who participates and organizes the activities is expert enough in presenting the similar rural setting and environment of a conventional ancient household.
To make the activity look more of that time, they set up wheat and millet fields, paddy, the traditional water-mill with mill stones that are 150+ years old. The kitchens even depict the ancient traditional style with vegetable gardens that were grown by the people themselves 100 years back. Also, the traditional hot stone bath setup is there, which is still popular across Bhutan.
Apart from the activities, the Folk Heritage Museum Bhutan makes best of its efforts, so that it can keep sharing the knowledge about the native natural resources, trees and plants of Bhutan, which were used for domestic purposes in ancient time. They have created an oasis of greenery with of all this in the center of the Bhutan’s capital Thimphu. Special offers at the Museum
At a very reasonable fee, tourists are offered specially to make their booking one week prior at least before their visit. This special offer includes demos of roasting rice or Zaw Ngowni, pounding rice or Tham Dhungni, extraction of oil or Markhu Tsene and brewing ara or Ara Kayne,within the boundaries of the museum.
Furthermore, if visitors are coming in a group with five or more members, then they can enjoy hearty traditional cuisines in open air lunch and dinner buffet. The menu includes traditional cuisines from all parts of the Kingdom.
Operating days and hours
The museum remains closed on Government holidays. Hours of operation are between 10:00 am to 4:30 pm from Monday to Friday, between 10:30 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays and 11:30 am to 3:30 pm on Sundays.
